URL rewrites are an extremely useful tool for retaining your site's Google rankings and ensuring users never see a 404 page when they visit your site.
URL rewrites are used to send a user to another page instead of their original destination. This would be used when you have finished a campaign and disabled the page on your website; however, the link could still be out there on the internet.
Instead of users finding that link and ending up on a 404 page, you can implement a URL rewrite that would send them to a new page instead.
To set up a URL rewrite, navigate to the Site Settings area of the CMS listed on the left-hand side menu and from there, click into the URL rewrites area on the secondary menu:
Once you're on the URL rewrite screen, you will want to fill in the following fields:
-
Old URL: This will be the page that no longer works on your site
-
New URL: This is where users will be sent if they try to access the Old URL mentioned above
Please Note: For URL rewrites, you do not need to put your site address at the start; Vennture will do this automatically. (see below)
In the image above, you can see that we have set up a rewrite so that any user who tries to access /industries/gas-and-coal will instead be sent to the /industry page
When you're happy with the links, you can click the "Add rewrite" button to activate them.
Publishing URL Rewrites
Now that our URL rewrite has been set up, the last thing to do is publish them out to the site. URL rewrites do NOT automatically publish out when created.
URL rewrites have their own publish function separate from the full site publish feature. These buttons can be found at the bottom of the URL rewrite screen, as shown below:
